Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help people process distressing experiences that continue to impact their emotional wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self.
When difficult or overwhelming events occur, the brain’s natural processing system can sometimes become disrupted. As a result, memories may remain unprocessed and continue to trigger distress in the present. EMDR supports the brain to reprocess these experiences so they become less emotionally charged and more integrated, allowing new perspectives and more adaptive beliefs to develop.
During EMDR, you will briefly focus on aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This process facilitates the brain’s innate capacity to process and resolve experiences without requiring detailed verbal descriptions of events.
EMDR is recognised internationally as an effective treatment for trauma and related conditions. EMDR is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
At Coastal Psychotherapy EMDR therapy sessions are offered on a weekly basis.
What can EMDR help with?
EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and is now widely used with a range of psychological difficulties where past experiences continue to influence present functioning. These may include:
It is important to note that EMDR is not limited to single-incident trauma. Many people benefit from EMDR when addressing the cumulative impact of ongoing stress, relational experiences, or earlier life events.
