The psychodynamic psychotherapy available at Coastal Psychotherapy is the Conversational Model of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (CM).
At Coastal Psychotherapy CM sessions are offered on a weekly or twice-weekly basis.
CM is a relational psychodynamic psychotherapy with a demonstrated evidence base for helping people deal with a range of problems.
Working Together Through the Conversational Model
CM is a gentle, thoughtful way of working that focuses on understanding your inner world (your feelings, relationships, patterns, and sense of self) within a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. It recognises that many of our current struggles are shaped by earlier experiences, especially within relationships, and that healing also happens through relationships.
CM is an approach developed to help people build a stronger, more compassionate sense of themselves through meaningful conversation. You can read more about this approach through the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy (ANZAP), the professional body that supports CM in Australia and New Zealand.
What This Therapy Offers
At its heart, this therapy offers a space where you can:
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we work together to understand you: your story, your relationships, and how you experience yourself and others.
A Deeper Way of Working
Many people come to therapy wanting not only relief from distress, but also a deeper understanding of why they feel the way they do and how change can happen. Psychotherapy supports this deeper work by gently exploring underlying emotional patterns, personal history, and relational experiences.
This doesn’t mean other approaches are less valuable. Different therapies suit different people and needs. Psychotherapy offers a particular kind of depth for those who are looking for meaningful, lasting change and greater self-understanding.
The Importance of Relationship
In CM the relationship between therapist and patient is central. Change doesn’t happen because someone gives advice or techniques. Change happens through a real, respectful human connection where you feel safe enough to explore what matters most.
We work together, not with you as a “problem to fix,” but as someone whose experiences are important and deserve understanding.
Who This Approach Can Help
Some people come with clear concerns, while others arrive feeling confused or overwhelmed. Both are completely welcome.
CM can be helpful for a wide range of difficulties, including:
It can also be valuable if you simply want to understand yourself better and live with greater authenticity.

What You Can Expect
The Conversational Model of Psychotherapy involves meeting regularly to talk about your experiences, thoughts, feelings, and relationships in a way that helps us understand patterns that may be contributing to current difficulties. Some of these patterns may be outside of awareness initially, and part of the work involves developing greater understanding over time.
You are not expected to know exactly what to say or where to begin. We work this out together. Therapy proceeds at a pace that feels manageable, with attention to creating a space that feels safe enough for honest exploration.
Over time, people often experience:
The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and circumstances. Some people attend for a shorter period focused on a particular difficulty, while others choose longer-term work to address more longstanding patterns.
At Coastal Psychotherapy, our aim is to create a warm, respectful space where you can explore whatever feels important, without judgement or pressure. The Coastal Psychotherapy therapists provide a thoughtful, skilled and professionally grounded perspective within a consistent therapeutic frame in which understanding and change can develop.
